From the Shelves of Wilson Memorial Library Submitted by Denise Preston, Library Director at Wilson Memorial Library. Greetings

from our library! May has been another busy month so far. The Hunger Games trilogy has been flying off of the shelves since the movie was released and even many adults are enjoying these books. We do have a waiting list even with 2 complete sets of the books, so if you are interested in reading them, give us a call and we will put you on the list. I would would like to remind people of an existing policy that we have in place and request your help in another. First, as we all know, it is the season for changing weather here in Iowa (isn’t it always?!) mainly in reference to severe weather. Many of you may not know what our Disaster Policy states, so policy here are the highlights. This covers everything from bomb threats, to ice storms, fire, etc., but I would like to bring to your attention the section which would cover severe storms and tornado activity. Tornado 1) At the sound of the siren or as deemed necessary by the library staff all patrons will be directed to the lower level to the old boy’s bathroom, which is to the south of the furnace room. 2) Adult patrons will not be held in the building against their will, however all patrons under the age of eighteen years will be detained until the threat of dangerous weather passes. 3) A portable radio and flashlight will be taken to the lower level by the library staff. 4) Patrons may leave the building once the staff has determined that weather conditions have cleared. Please be advised that though it is not part of our policy we will do our best to take cell phones with us to the basem*nt so that if necessary the kids can call their parents to let them know where they are. Another thing I would like to mention is that we have been doing a lot of borrowing and receiving of library materials from other libraries. This is a very good thing as it means more people are reading/listening to books. This lending and borrow-

ing system is called SILO, which stands for State of Iowa Library Online and one of the big benefits of SILO is that it allows us to borrow books from other libraries which we do not own, but would probably not benefit from owning. We do receive a small amount annually from the State of Iowa for this service, but nowhere near the amount to cover the entire postage amount. What this boils down to is that from this point forward we will have to stand firm on the amount of requesting a set fee for each transaction for adults only. We will not charge children or those doing research for a school project. We do appreciate your understanding in this matter, it will help alleviate some of our postage expenses. We were the fo fortunate rtunate recipients of a generous check from the Keokuk County Endowment Foundation in April. We will be receiving new blinds for all of the windows (there are noneupstairs currently), a new magazine rack which will hold more magazines and therefore reduce clutter, and a new color printer which will be more heavy duty and much more efficient to operate. Our Summer Reading Program will begin in June on every Tuesday from 11:00-12:30. This program is free and available to children preschool through 5th grade. This year’s theme is “Dream Big” so the sky is the limit as to what we can cover. We have our stories, crafts and snacks all lined up, so we hope you can join us! In addition, we will be offering a program for teens, ages 6th grade through 12th. The theme is “Own the Night” and we have some great ideas and incentives for those who attend. The dates and times will be announced soon. Lastly, our Memorial Day holiday hours are as follows: Saturday, May 26th - closed Sunday, May 27th - closed Monday, May 28th - closed Until next time be safe and have a great month of May! • • •

Mailbox Improvement Week Week Each year, the Postal Service designates the third full week of May as Mailbox Improvement Week. This is to call attention to the need for providing mailboxes that are: Approved by the postmaster general. Designed to protect the mail from weather. Safe to use. Conveniently located. Neat in appearance. Mailboxes that meet these five important requirements help delivery and collection operations and improve service to the entire route.

Allaman chosen as SOS Leader at AIB Jon Allaman of Keota has been selected as a Student Orientation Staff (SOS) Leader at AIB College of Business. “The SOS Leader program is vital to the success of AIB students,” said Dr. Susan Cigelman, vice president for academic affairs. “For incoming first-year students, it is a chance to have a mentor who will show them the campus, introduce them to the AIB community and help them make a smooth transition to college. Thanks to the efforts of SOS Leaders like Jon, AIB’s freshmen can start the Fall term with confidence and focus.” The program also gives aspiring SOS Leaders practical and valuable experience they’ll be able to apply to future job searches. She was by her husband’s side in the White House during the Civil War and with him on the night of his assassination at Ford’s Theatre on April 14, 1865. As a young woman, Mary was as bright and buoyant as she was depressed and dour as a widow. When she died in 1882, at the age of 63, Mary Lincoln was confined to the Springfield, Illinois, residence of her sister Elizabeth Edwards. She was interred within the Lincoln Tomb in Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield alongside her husband. The English Valleys History Center is dedicated to preserving our heritage and contributing to our community. Free will donations are accepted, but this program is free of charge to the public.

Family Messages to the Class of 2012

Caleb Ahrens Caleb, I think of the years and how quickly they passed. I remember the cchalhallenges faced and the victorious way you overcame each one. Mile markers of you growing up come to mind— looking at the redfaced, yellow haired, screaming boy and the overwhelming feeling of, “Who is this little person?” The tting of your rst hearing aid, watching the wonderment on your face as you turned circles in the hall listening to the voices of those who passed; the stomping of your feet as you rst heard the sound of your footsteps; the echoing of your voice as you sang louder and louder with the amazement of what you heard. Then the surgeries with all the good and bad of the long trips that went with them. You have overcome hurdles in life that others would never suspect you faced. I watched you strive to walk in the footsteps of those you admired. I remember our long conversations of what makes the depth of a person, discussing the principles that make living life worthwhile, and the unending journey we all walk as we search for God’s will in our lives. Now I look at you Caleb, remembering the glimpses of the past. I feel extreme joy thinking of the man you have become. I am so proud to call you “my son”. Caleb, as you go forth to carve carve your future, walk with God. Continue Continue to let Him lead you, as He has done your entire life. He will guide you, and He will not let you down. With joy and deepest love, Mom

Stephanie Baker Stephanie, You camethat intoIto myafraid life ato month expected. Youwent weresosofast tiny and fragile was have earlier you outthen of my site. Time between bringing you home and starting school. I remember that when you were ve and ready for kindergarten you stated “that I’m not going to school with snap up pants” but because of you only weighing only twenty pounds it was hard nding clothes that would t. Through out your grade school year’s things came along like dance, piano and ute lesson, and so many other interesting activities that you had to try. I was always so proud that you wanted to experience all that Keota had to offer. The things I remember the most was how often you were always trying to get a new pet in the house. I can not recall how many gold sh we went through before you gured out that Mom did not feed them when you were gone to your Dad’s for the weekend. I can not believe that it h has as been eighteen years. I’m so proud of the woman you have become. I look at you and see such a caring, loving, funny, dedicated, hard working young lady. I know the foundation that you have built will lead you to the goals you have set for yourself. I hope you know how much I love you and how proud I’m to say that you are my daughter. I can not wait to see all your hopes and dreams come true. Love you, Mom Haley & Hannah Brenneman Dear Hannah and Haley, It has been so much fun to watch the two of you grow up together as best friends. We will never forget the “twin” language you had before you could talk to the rest of us. Haley’s name sounded like “Bob” and Hannah’s was a grunt of some type. At birth the two of you cried from the the moment you were born until the nurses put you in the same crib. Later when we separated your bedrooms it was an adjustment. This coming fall will be the biggest separation yet and it will be a challenge. You are both capable of succeeding on your own and you will always know the other is just a phone call away. With twin girls there has never been a lack of drama around our house and we wouldn’t trade it for anything. I can’t imagine how boring and quiet it will be. We will all miss you come fall but Cole will probably miss you the most. He will miss the rides to school, having you and your friends around and overall someone to be with. You have made us proud and we will always be there for you in all that you choose to do. Don’t let anything hold you back and together we will help you make your dreams come true. Love Always, Mom, Dad and Cole Nick Clark Dear Nickoles , We are so very proud of you. When When you came into this world you w were ere very sick and had to ght for the rst year of your life . You have always been our smallest child and had to work harder to get your voice heard. Nick you worked hard and you slipped up, but here you stand 18 and graduating from high school. Nick your next step is to go to college . You told us you wish to teac teach h and become a coach . As your parents knowing you, this dream will come true . We sit here so very proud and so full of joy for you . There are no words to tell you how we truely feel or how happy we are that you made it here. The work you have put into your own life so far shows us that you will make it in any and everything you do in life We love you Nick, Mom and Dad Trevor Draisey Dear Trevor, We are extremely proud of all you’ve accomplished accomplished in school -academically and in all of your extra curricular activities. We are going to miss watching you and your friends in music, speech, drama, and athletics next year. Please bring them around for homemade ice cream when you all come home from college for weekends! Good luck at UNI - make friends, have some fun, and study hard. We are always here for you during good times and bad. We love you! Mom & Dad

Sean Erwin Dear Sean, Life has its ups and downs and and I feel that you are capable of always always making the decision that will best benet you in your future endeavors. As parpar ents we always want what is best for our children and as parents we have always tried to help you make decisions that will make you a better person and always treat others with respect, and I feel we have accomplished that. We would like to take this opportunity to wish you well and put your knowledge and ablities to work for yourself as you move forward with the rest of your life. Gary and Cindy Erwin

Brayton Flynn Dear Brayton, I can’t believe the time has come for you to graduate. I don’t know where the time has gone.We have enjoyed watching you grow through the years. Watching you play sports, dancing, showing your sheep at the fairs. We are very proud of all your accomplishments through the years and know you will have many more. We will miss you so much when you go off this fall to college. Don’t forget to come home often to see us,we’re always here for you. We wish you the very best and will miss you lots. LOVE YOU LOTS! DAD and MOM Allie Horras Dear Allie, We experienced you, our rst grandchild at 4 days old. You were, and still are a very special girls to say the least! Special being walking at 8 months, driving a car at 2 years, dragging in every stray cat, driving your rst car through a mud road after a two inch rain to “get a life.” Your life is just beginning and we want only only that you be happy and true to yourself. The girl that calls her mom after she has accidently hit a rabbit to ask, “What do I do?” Mom says, “nothing.” She then holds, and comforts the rabbit as it dies. This is the girl who deserves much in life. Our love and best wishes, Grandma & Grandpa Horras Brittany Lane To our daughter Brittany, You make us very proud. We know you you had to grow up very fast and have had to deal with a lot of tragedy and that this has not been easy on you. We know it has made you the young adult you are today. I know that your mom is looking down from heaven and smiling down on you. Forever always no matter what, I love you, Mommy & Dad Natalie Luers Natalie, The time that seemed so far away 18 years ago has come to pass in the blink of an eye. We are so proud of the young woman we have seen transformed before us. Be condent of this, that He who began a good work in you will be faithful to complete it! Thank you for the the many blessings you bring to our family. Love always, Mom, Dad, Bradley and Bryant Courtney McNurlen Courtney, There is such a thing called the “parental curse.” It states that according to your actions and behavior, God will get you back, and He will give you a carbon copy of yourself. Well, if that’s the case, I don’t think I was the sibling that gave my parents gray hair…Words can’t express how proud I am of the person you have become. Through all, you’ve shown you have what it takes to make it through anything life may throw your way. You’ve used that stubborn streak to your advantage. From an early age, you’ve always taken a stand and stood up for what you believe in, I’m sure you had a good reason for not picking up Grandma’s apples! Stubbornness can also be interpreted as courage. Anyway, someday the plan laid out for u uss will be clear. We all love you, and even though Caleb plans on taking over your room (but leaving it pink in your honor), you can always come back and attempt to reclaim it. Lastly, wherever your path may lead you, I have faith it is the right one. And again, if you are my “clone” as people say, I’m honored. Love you always, Mom, Caleb and Kaden Leah Reed Leah, Wow… how the years have gone by so fast! It seems like it wasn’t that that long ago when we brought our brand new baby girl named “Leah” home from the hospital, where her big sister Sheila was anxiously waiting. Then three short years later you became a big sister when your little sister Hannah was born. We have enjoyed watching you grow up from a little girl to a beautiful young lady. Through out the years we have watched watched you go through struggles in school and how very proud we are of how well you have overcome those struggles. You should be very proud of yourself being on the honor roll each quarter through out your senior year. Great job Leah! We know how excited you are to move on with your life and be on your own. As you start your new adventures going off to college, just remember that we will always be there for you whenever you need us. Leah… always remember to keep that sweetness that you have about you, that sparkle in you eye and that beautiful smile you have and you will go far. When life gets tough just take a step back, take a deep breath and laugh out loud and you should be able to make it through anything. We are and always will be very proud of you no matter what you do. We are very anxious to see where your life will take you in the future! Good luck in everything you do. Love Always & Forever – Dad and Mom (Mark & Robin Reed) (Sheila & Hannah)

Kaitlyn Schmitt Dear Kaitlyn, Where do we begin! Who would have thought this day would be here already. It seems just like yesterday you were learning to walk and talk. Look at you now, you’re getting ready to walk out our door and into a new chapter of your life. You have become a very independent, condent, condent, and hard working young woman. You have been and continue to be a great role model for your underclassmen. We are so proud of you. Thank you for all the memories. All the sports, arts and drama. You were not always the best at everything you did, but you always did YOUR best, and that is what really mattered. You have reached and conqu conquered ered many milestones and we are sure your future will be as great. Central College won’t know what hit them when you arrive in August. You know we will always be there for you. Money, laundry, food, money, and of course our words of wisdom. Always do your best and keep your head held high. We are only a phone call away. Love, Mom and Dad Brandon Sieren Dear Brandon, Congratulations! We are proud of you! As your time at KHS is q quickly uickly coming to an end, we know you are ready to move on to bigger and better things. You will do well at anything that you set your mind to. You have brought so much joy to our lives. We will miss your unique sense of humor; there is only one Brandon, that is for sure! We have some bits of advice for you in the form of “Old Farmer’s Quotes” as you head to Iowa State: •Life is simpler when you plow around the stump •Do not corner something that you know is meaner than you •Every path has a few puddles •When you wallow with the p igs, expect to get dir ty •Remember that silence is sometimes the best answer •If you nd yourself in a hole, the rst thing to do is stop digg in •Always drink upstream from the herd Love, Mom, Dad, Bryce, & Brooke Casey Sieren Casey, It is unbelievable how fast the last eighteen years have gone. We are so proud of you and the great examples that you set for everyone. You have worked so hard for all you have accomplished. Thank you for making good choices! We are really going to miss you this fall, especially when Kelsi needs help with homework! LOL:) (We all know parents can’t help with homework) Even though it will be a hard transition, transition, (for Mom that is) know that your family is always here for you. We look forward to watching you continue to play basketball. Your talents are endless. Continue to be Amazing!! Good Luck & God Bless. We Love You, Mom, Dad, Brandi & Kelsi Shawna Sieren Dear Shawna, As you are about to come to an important milestone in your life, we want you to know how proud we are of you and your many accomplishments. While it certainly Hasn’t been easy at times, you blazed your own trail and became your own shining star. More than your outstanding individual accomplishments, we are very proud of the young lady you have become. Your sense of humor, kind heart, fun-loving personality, and dedication to any task are qualities that we see in you and what makes you special. These qualities will help you enjoy the many rewards in life, as well as endure the disappointments. Remember to surround yourself with positive inuinuences and take time to pursue your passions. Thank you for making us very proud parents and brightening our world. Love, Mom and Dad

Rachel White To my sweet Rachel, I cannot begin to tell you the level of happiness you have brought into our life. It seems like only yesterday that we gave birth to a beautiful baby girl. I still remember so many things like, when you started sucking your thumb and wondered if we would ever get you to stop, or when you decided to cut your hair right before your role as ower girl in a wedding. You have now reached a new milestone in your life and we feel you are ready for the next journey-College. Just remember you can achieve anything anything if you just work hard and never let anyone stand in your way. All of us are very proud of you and no matter which life choices you make, we will always love you and will be there forever. Congratulations & Happy graduation day! Love You Always, Mom, Dad, Cameron, Alyssa Garrett Wright Garrett, Well it’s 2012, time for you to graduate. You ahve really grown up fast. It doesn’t seem that long ago you were learning how to ride a bike. It just seems like yesterday you were behind the plate catching in little league, but here you are all grown up. We are very proud of you and wish you the best in the years to come. Love, Mom & Dad Alix McHugh Congratulations Alix! We are so proud of you and know there is nothing you can’t accomplish! Some people may be more vulnerable to contaminants in drinking water than the general population. Immuno-compromised persons such as persons with cancer undergoing chemotherapy, persons who have undergone organ transplants, people with mV/AIDS or other immune system disorders, some elderly, and infants can be particularly at risk from infections. These people should seek advice about drinking water from their health care providers. EPA/CDC guidelines on appropriate means to lessen the risk of infection by Cryptosporidium and other microbial contaminants are available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-4264791). If present, elevated levels of lead can cause serious health problems, especially for pregnant women and young children. Lead in drinking water is primarily from materials and components associated with service lines and home plumbing. Keota is responsible for providing high quality drinking water, but cannot control the variety of materials used in plumbing components. When your water has been sitting for several hours, you can minimize the potential for lead exposure by ushing ushingyour your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for drinking or cooking. If you are concerned about lead in your water, you may wish to have your water tested. Information on lead in drinking water, testing methods and steps you can take to minimize exposure is available from the

Safe Drinking Water Hotline or at http://www. epa.gov/safewaterZlead. SOURCE WATER ASSESSMENT INFORMATION

We ended up 10 strokes out of third place.” The Savages w were ere led by senior Austin Bringman, who shot an 83 on the day and tied for sixth individually in the conference, ultimately finishing seventh on the card back. Bringman was the only golfer from any team other than North Mahaska and Belle Plaine to finish in the top 11 golfers in the conference. “He shot decently shooting 41 and 42,” Streigle said. “He was hoping to finish a l ittle bit higher than that.” On Friday, the Savage boys wrapped up their season with a trip to Sectionals. They finished sixth overall with a team score of 397.

“We were 45 st strokes rokes outside of moving on, so we weren’t really close there, but we did break 400 stroke s, which we did not do last year,” Streigle said. Bringman again paced the Savages with a score of 88, but fell seven strokes short of advancing on to Districts. Cole Streigle finished 17th individually with a score of 95, Jackson Davis turned in a score of 105, Derek Albert shot a 109 and Colby Kerkove rounded out the scoring with a round of 120. With the boys season drawing to a close, Streigle said he was pleas ed with the amount of work the boys team h ad put in this season. “Overall, I am pleased with what they have d one this year,” he said. “Several of the kids have shown a lot of improvement over last year and in the grand scheme of things, that is the big deal for me, just to see their growth.” The girls competed at districts on Monday, May 14 after this paper went to press.

They were both well below their average with scores of 101 and 105 respectively. “That is what you want to have,” Kingland said. “I just want to see improvement all the time and they have been improving.” On Friday, the boys went to Sectionals for what turned out to be their last meet of the season. The Bears played well, but finished 15 strokes away from moving on to Districts. “We just didn’t have our best day,” Kingland said. “We didn’t shoot bad, but just not well enough to move on. Abby Westhoff also had a good day, running a personal best 100 meter dash time of 13.9. She missed the state cutoff by .4 seconds. The Bears also got fourth place finishes out of their 4X400 relay and their 4X800 relay. Although the Bears seaso season n is coming to an end, they are happy with the way things went overall this season. “As a team, we were a close knit group,” Caster said. “Everyone was very encouraging to each other. The Sigourney girls ran well at the District Meet in Wayland on Thursday; they qualified high jumper, Jerica Gretter for the State Meet. Gretter finished finished third at the meet, but her jump jump of 5’ was good enough to qualify her for state. “She was a little nervous,” said head coach Jenny Harter. Harter. “She knew who she was up against and what their records were coming in. She knew she would have to have a really good day. When she missed and only got 5’ she was a little disappointed, because she knew she could get 5’4”.” With a third place finish, Gretter Gretter had to wait to see if her jump of 5’ would be high enough to earn her a trip to st ate, but when the qualifying names came out, her name was on the list. “We found out at 1 p.m. on Friday, Fun Day Day at Sigourney High School, so we were all outside and we got to announce it to the whole school at the

Keota Girls Save Best For Last The Eagles went into the district meet looking to run their fastest times of the season, and they did just that. Unfortunately for Keota, they were not quite able to qualify anybody for the State Meet in Des Moines. The shuttle hurdle

“One of our goals was to bring our times down, and we did that,” said head coach Dan Stout. “Unfortunately, we didn’t get anything to qualify for the state tournament, but we were close in a couple things. Unfortunately, the Eagles got narrowly edged out on time, needing to shave two more seconds off to qualify. Kesli Sieren also competed well, finishing third at the District Meet in Wayland. She ended six inches short of the distance needed to qualify for State. Megan Olson finished third in the 200 meter dash for Keota and Lexi Sieren was sixth in the 100 meter dash while they turned in their fastest times of the year.

same time she found out so it was kind of exciting,” Harter said. Although Gretter didn’t quite reach reach her school record of 5’4”, neither were many of her fellow high jumpers across the state. Gretter is listed as the 15 seeded high jumper at state, but there are 13 high jumpers bunched up between 5’-5’3”. Although Gretter Gretter is close to a lot lot of the girls, she is competing against, Gretter is just going to focus on what she can do. “She already already broke the school record this year, that was one of her goals. Her other goal was t o go to State,” Harter said. “It’s going to be her very last time doing the high jump, so she is wanting to get 5’4” which she knows she can get. I don’t think it matters what place she gets, she just wants to get her personal goal of 5’4” and above.” The rest of the meet didn’t quite break in the Savages favor. The Savages were hoping they could get a couple more events to State, but poor luck in the hurdles derailed Sigourney’s chances. Although nobody is joining Gretter Gretter on the field in Des Moines, the Savages were still proud of the way they were able to perform their best in Wayland. “I am excited about some of the things that I saw this year for us coming back next year,” Harter said. “We ended the season on a good note even though we didn’t get as many people through to State as we wanted. Nearly everybody ran their best time of the season and that is always what you want to see at the end.”

The Bears went to Belle Plaine on Thursday for Districts and came out with 20 team points and a representative at the State Meet in Des Moines. Cameron Heitshusen won the 110 M High Hurdles in a school record time of 15.56 seconds. “Going in he was pretty nervous,” said head coach Bronson McCulley. “It was something he really wanted to do. I just told him to run his race. He worked hard in practice and listened to Coach Matt Snakenburg, who is our expert on hurdles. But he is not going to just be happy with making it to State; now he is going to try to place.” Heitshusen’s time was the seventh fastest qualifying time in 1A. He runs on Friday at Drake as the only representative from English Valleys track. “It is a great thing for him,” said McCulley. “He is representing the school in a positive way, and there are a lot of people excited for him.” The Bears Bears worked hard this year, and improved their times throughout the course of the season. Trevor Frazier dropped over a minute from his 1600 meter run time in his first season. Many of the other kids showed a lot of improvement as well, and
