Valedictorians or top graduating seniors were once again honored by KWWL Television and Wartburg College on Sat., April 28. The students took part in KWWL’s 28th annual “Best of the Class” celebration. Shawna Sieren from Keota High High School was honored as a member of the 2012 Best of the Class. Best of the Class stud students ents were videotaped on the Wartburg campus for a series of public service announcements, which started airing on May 14 on KWWL, Iowa’s News Channel. They also had the opportunity to be photographed with KWWL news anchors Ron Steele and Tara Thomas, Chief MeteorologistMark Schnackenberg Schnackenberg,, and Sports Director Rick Coleman. In its 28 years years of recognizing recognizing acaacademic excellence, KWWL’s Best of the Class has honored nearly 4,000 top graduating seniors. from our library! May has been another busy month so far. The Hunger Games trilogy has been flying off of the shelves since the movie was released and even many adults are enjoying these books. We do have a waiting list even with 2 complete sets of the books, so if you are interested in reading them, give us a call and we will put you on the list. I would would like to remind people of an existing policy that we have in place and request your help in another. First, as we all know, it is the season for changing weather here in Iowa (isn’t it always?!) mainly in reference to severe weather. Many of you may not know what our Disaster Policy states, so policy here are the highlights. This covers everything from bomb threats, to ice storms, fire, etc., but I would like to bring to your attention the section which would cover severe storms and tornado activity. Tornado 1) At the sound of the siren or as deemed necessary by the library staff all patrons will be directed to the lower level to the old boy’s bathroom, which is to the south of the furnace room. 2) Adult patrons will not be held in the building against their will, however all patrons under the age of eighteen years will be detained until the threat of dangerous weather passes. 3) A portable radio and flashlight will be taken to the lower level by the library staff. 4) Patrons may leave the building once the staff has determined that weather conditions have cleared. Please be advised that though it is not part of our policy we will do our best to take cell phones with us to the basem*nt so that if necessary the kids can call their parents to let them know where they are. Another thing I would like to mention is that we have been doing a lot of borrowing and receiving of library materials from other libraries. This is a very good thing as it means more people are reading/listening to books. This lending and borrow-
ing system is called SILO, which stands for State of Iowa Library Online and one of the big benefits of SILO is that it allows us to borrow books from other libraries which we do not own, but would probably not benefit from owning. We do receive a small amount annually from the State of Iowa for this service, but nowhere near the amount to cover the entire postage amount. What this boils down to is that from this point forward we will have to stand firm on the amount of requesting a set fee for each transaction for adults only. We will not charge children or those doing research for a school project. We do appreciate your understanding in this matter, it will help alleviate some of our postage expenses. We were the fo fortunate rtunate recipients of a generous check from the Keokuk County Endowment Foundation in April. We will be receiving new blinds for all of the windows (there are noneupstairs currently), a new magazine rack which will hold more magazines and therefore reduce clutter, and a new color printer which will be more heavy duty and much more efficient to operate. Our Summer Reading Program will begin in June on every Tuesday from 11:00-12:30. This program is free and available to children preschool through 5th grade. This year’s theme is “Dream Big” so the sky is the limit as to what we can cover. We have our stories, crafts and snacks all lined up, so we hope you can join us! In addition, we will be offering a program for teens, ages 6th grade through 12th. The theme is “Own the Night” and we have some great ideas and incentives for those who attend. The dates and times will be announced soon. Allaman chosen as SOS Leader at AIB Jon Allaman of Keota has been selected as a Student Orientation Staff (SOS) Leader at AIB College of Business. “The SOS Leader program is vital to the success of AIB students,” said Dr. Susan Cigelman, vice president for academic affairs. “For incoming first-year students, it is a chance to have a mentor who will show them the campus, introduce them to the AIB community and help them make a smooth transition to college. She was by her husband’s side in the White House during the Civil War and with him on the night of his assassination at Ford’s Theatre on April 14, 1865. As a young woman, Mary was as bright and buoyant as she was depressed and dour as a widow. When she died in 1882, at the age of 63, Mary Lincoln was confined to the Springfield, Illinois, residence of her sister Elizabeth Edwards. She was interred within the Lincoln Tomb in Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield alongside her husband. The English Valleys History Center is dedicated to preserving our heritage and contributing to our community. Free will donations are accepted, but this program is free of charge to the public.

Keota City Council Meeting
May 7, 2012 The Keota City Council met on May 7, 2012, in the city hall. The meeting was called to order at 7:00 P.M. by Mayor Anthony Cansler. Council Members answering roll call were Greiner, Westendorf, Preston and Conrad. Council member Hill arrived shortly after roll call was taken. City employees present were Slaubaugh and Osweiler. Heath McDonald, Danielle Imhoff and Joeleen Krause were also in attendance. Motion was made by Conrad to approve the agenda, Westendorf seconded the motion. Motion carried unanimously. Motion was made by Greiner, seconded by Westendorf to approve the minutes from the previous meeting. Moti on carried unanimously. Kevin reported the following for the public works department. There was a miscommunication between Tom Edwards and Janie Hammes about the removal of a tree planted by him when he was mayor. Kevin was informed by Edwards that he did not want the tree removed, but was told by Hammes that
Edwards was accepting of the removal of the tree. The new skid loader is working very well and has enhanced the work production. Miller will be replacing some of his sidewalks before Fun Days. The city received a stop sign grant from the DOT. They have borrowed Sigourney’s paint sprayer to redo the street lines. The CCR report was present for council approval. Motion was made by Conrad, seconded by Preston to approve the CCR report. The report will be published in The Keota Eagle and posted around town. Three bids were received for fixing the city maintenance building parking lot. The council discussed each of the bids and decided to go with the lowest bid. Motion was made by Preston, seconded by Greiner to approve Josh Hall for the maintenance shop parking lot. Motion carried unanimously. Motion was made by Conrad, seconded by Greiner to approve public works report. Motion carried unanimously. Doug was unable to attend the meeting but present a written report. He issued citations that included: theft, dog at large, contributing to minors, careless diving and failure to provide proof against liability. Thirteen other complaints and service calls were also attended to. The council asked Heath McDonald to attend the meeting to discuss doing a city cleanup with him. Heath told the council he could take any scrap metal item and appliances. He cannot take electronics because of the materials they are made of. He would prefer the city pick the items up and put them in a trailer on his property. The money made from this would be donated back to the city to use for park equipment. The council will discuss how to handle other materials and a date at the upcoming council meetings. Danielle Imhoff attended the meeting to discuss a shop she would like to put on their empty lot. Family Messages to the Class of 2012
Caleb Ahrens Caleb, I think of the years and how quickly they passed. I remember the cchalhallenges faced and the victorious way you overcame each one. Mile markers of you growing up come to mind— looking at the redfaced, yellow haired, screaming boy and the overwhelming feeling of, “Who is this little person?” The tting of your rst hearing aid, watching the wonderment on your face as you turned circles in the hall listening to the voices of those who passed; the stomping of your feet as you rst heard the sound of your footsteps; the echoing of your voice as you sang louder and louder with the amazement of what you heard. Then the surgeries with all the good and bad of the long trips that went with them. You have overcome hurdles in life that others would never suspect you faced. I watched you strive to walk in the footsteps of those you admired. I remember our long conversations of what makes the depth of a person, discussing the principles that make living life worthwhile, and the unending journey we all walk as we search for God’s will in our lives. Now I look at you Caleb, remembering the glimpses of the past. I feel extreme joy thinking of the man you have become. I am so proud to call you “my son”. Caleb, as you go forth to carve carve your future, walk with God. Continue Continue to let Him lead you, as He has done your entire life. He will guide you, and He will not let you down. Time between bringing you home and starting school. I remember that when you were ve and ready for kindergarten you stated “that I’m not going to school with snap up pants” but because of you only weighing only twenty pounds it was hard nding clothes that would t. Through out your grade school year’s things came along like dance, piano and ute lesson, and so many other interesting activities that you had to try. I was always so proud that you wanted to experience all that Keota had to offer. The things I remember the most was how often you were always trying to get a new pet in the house. I can not recall how many gold sh we went through before you gured out that Mom did not feed them when you were gone to your Dad’s for the weekend. I can not believe that it h has as been eighteen years. I’m so proud of the woman you have become. I look at you and see such a caring, loving, funny, dedicated, hard working young lady. I know the foundation that you have built will lead you to the goals you have set for yourself. I hope you know how much I love you and how proud I’m to say that you are my daughter. I can not wait to see all your hopes and dreams come true. Love you, Mom Haley & Hannah Brenneman Dear Hannah and Haley, It has been so much fun to watch the two of you grow up together as best friends. We will never forget the “twin” language you had before you could talk to the rest of us. Haley’s name sounded like “Bob” and Hannah’s was a grunt of some type. At birth the two of you cried from the the moment you were born until the nurses put you in the same crib. Later when we separated your bedrooms it was an adjustment. This coming fall will be the biggest separation yet and it will be a challenge. You are both capable of succeeding on your own and you will always know the other is just a phone call away. With twin girls there has never been a lack of drama around our house and we wouldn’t trade it for anything. I can’t imagine how boring and quiet it will be. We will all miss you come fall but Cole will probably miss you the most. He will miss the rides to school, having you and your friends around and overall someone to be with. You have made us proud and we will always be there for you in all that you choose to do. Don’t let anything hold you back and together we will help you make your dreams come true. Drinking water, including bottled water, may reasonably be expected to contain at least small amounts of some contaminants. The presence
of contaminants does not necessarily indicate that water posed a health risk. More information about contaminants or potential health effects can be obtained by ca))ing the Environmental Protection Agency’s Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-4264791). Some people may be more vulnerable to contaminants in drinking water than the general population. Immuno-compromised persons such as persons with cancer undergoing chemotherapy, persons who have undergone organ transplants, people with mV/AIDS or other immune system disorders, some elderly, and infants can be particularly at risk from infections. These people should seek advice about drinking water from their health care providers. EPA/CDC guidelines on appropriate means to lessen the risk of infection by Cryptosporidium and other microbial contaminants are available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-4264791). If present, elevated levels of lead can cause serious health problems, especially for pregnant women and young children. Lead in drinking water is primarily from materials and components associated with service lines and home plumbing. Keota is responsible for providing high quality drinking water, but cannot control the variety of materials used in plumbing components. When your water has been sitting for several hours, you can minimize the potential for lead exposure by ushing ushingyour your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for drinking or cooking. If you are concerned about lead in your water, you may wish to have your water tested. Information on lead in drinking water, testing methods and steps you can take to minimize exposure is available from the
Safe Drinking Water Hotline or at http://www. epa.gov/safewaterZlead. SOURCE WATER ASSESSMENT INFORMATION
The Keota water supply obtains its water from the Cambrian Jordan Sandstone aquifer. The Cambrian Jordan Sandstone aquifer was determined to be not susceptible to contamination because the characteristics of the aquifer and overlying materials prevent easy access of contaminants to the aquifer. The wells will somewhat susceptible to activities such as not be susceptible to most contaminant sources except through pathways to the aquifer such as abandoned or poorly maintained wells. A detailed evaluation of your source water was completed by the IDNR, and is available from Keota City Hall at (641) 636-2266. OTHER INFORMATION

English Valleys Girls Season Ends at Districts

We ended up 10 strokes out of third place.” The Savages w were ere led by senior Austin Bringman, who shot an 83 on the day and tied for sixth individually in the conference, ultimately finishing seventh on the card back. Bringman was the only golfer from any team other than North Mahaska and Belle Plaine to finish in the top 11 golfers in the conference. “He shot decently shooting 41 and 42,” Streigle said. “He was hoping to finish a l ittle bit higher than that.” On Friday, the Savage boys wrapped up their season with a trip to Sectionals. They finished sixth overall with a team score of 397.
“We were 45 st strokes rokes outside of moving on, so we weren’t really close there, but we did break 400 stroke s, which we did not do last year,” Streigle said. Bringman again paced the Savages with a score of 88, but fell seven strokes short of advancing on to Districts. Cole Streigle finished 17th individually with a score of 95, Jackson Davis turned in a score of 105, Derek Albert shot a 109 and Colby Kerkove rounded out the scoring with a round of 120. With the boys season drawing to a close, Streigle said he was pleas ed with the amount of work the boys team h ad put in this season. “Overall, I am pleased with what they have d one this year,” he said. “Several of the kids have shown a lot of improvement over last year and in the grand scheme of things, that is the big deal for me, just to see their growth.” The girls competed at districts on Monday, May 14 after this paper went to press.

They were both well below their average with scores of 101 and 105 respectively. “That is what you want to have,” Kingland said. “I just want to see improvement all the time and they have been improving.” On Friday, the boys went to Sectionals for what turned out to be their last meet of the season. The Bears played well, but finished 15 strokes away from moving on to Districts. “We just didn’t have our best day,” Kingland said. “We didn’t shoot bad, but just not well enough to move on. I am so proud of these guys though.

The Sigourney girls ran well at the District Meet in Wayland on Thursday; they qualified high jumper, Jerica Gretter for the State Meet. Gretter finished finished third at the meet, but her jump jump of 5’ was good enough to qualify her for state. “She was a little nervous,” said head coach Jenny Harter. Harter. “She knew who she was up against and what their records were coming in. She knew she would have to have a really good day. Keota Girls Save Best For Last The Eagles went into the district meet looking to run their fastest times of the season, and they did just that. Unfortunately for Keota, they were not quite able to qualify anybody for the State Meet in Des Moines. The shuttle hurdle
“One of our goals was to bring our times down, and we did that,” said head coach Dan Stout. “Unfortunately, we didn’t get anything to qualify for the state tournament, but we were close in a couple things. Overall, the season was a positive. Everybody got faster as the year went on, that is always a good thing. We need to start

Unfortunately, the Eagles got narrowly edged out on time, needing to shave two more seconds off to qualify. Kesli Sieren also competed well, finishing third at the District Meet in Wayland. She ended six inches short of the distance needed to qualify for State. Megan Olson finished third in the 200 meter dash for Keota and Lexi Sieren was sixth in the 100 meter dash while they turned in their fastest times of the year.

The Savages were hoping they could get a couple more events to State, but poor luck in the hurdles derailed Sigourney’s chances. Although nobody is joining Gretter Gretter on the field in Des Moines, the Savages were still proud of the way they were able to perform their best in Wayland. “I am excited about some of the things that I saw this year for us coming back next year,” Harter said. “We ended the season on a good note even though we didn’t get as many people through to State as we wanted. In the 1600, Draisey qualified 20th in 1A with a 4:47.55. “Coming into the mile I had the fastest time, but I didn’t want to let that keep me from going hard, so I pushed it for the first couple laps and then just cruised to the end to save a little for the 800,” Draisey said. “That ended up working pretty well for me because I ended up having enough left in the 800 to win.” Draisey is also looking to turn in his best times of the season in Des Moines and earn a medal. “I would like to finish towards the top of that second heat,” he said. “I haven’t ran great open 800 times this year because I have been so tired after my other events, so I am hoping running it fresh, I will be able to put in a personal best time. That is my goal.”

Cameron Heitshusen won the 110 M High Hurdles in a school record time of 15.56 seconds. “Going in he was pretty nervous,” said head coach Bronson McCulley. “It was something he really wanted to do. I just told him to run his race. He worked hard in practice and listened to Coach Matt Snakenburg, who is our expert on hurdles. But he is not going to just be happy with making it to State; now he is going to try to place.” Heitshusen’s time was the seventh fastest qualifying time in 1A. He runs on Friday at Drake as the only representative from English Valleys track. “It is a great thing for him,” said McCulley. “He is representing the school in a positive way, and there are a lot of people excited for him.” The Bears Bears worked hard this year, and improved their times throughout the course of the season. Trevor Frazier dropped over a minute from his 1600 meter run time in his first season. Many of the other kids showed a lot of improvement as well, and

Home Cours Coursee Advantage Wasn’t the Ticket at the SICL Boy’s Golf Meet The Sigourney Golf & Country Club’s 9-hole course is home to both the Sigourney Savages and the Tri-County Trojans, but neither team could take advantage of the home course for a victory at the South Iowa Cedar League Conference meet last Monday, May 7. The Savages finished in the middle of the pack in fifth place with a score of 383, but the Trojans scored 417 to finish in last place.
